In 1876, the Greasley Castle was a fully licensed establishment under victualler Charles William Johnson. Named after the remains of the nearby fortified manor house of the same name, built by Nicholas Cantalupe, who received permission to fortify Greasley in 1341, just before the battle of Neville's Cross, and when the fear of a Scottish invasion was strong in the land. The remains of his fortification remain, but are so masked by later farm buildings that they are difficult to understand. The curved frontage and conical roof of the pub are reminiscent of a medieval castle tower.
Now the pub is an important part of the community and offers a wide range of real ales from local and national breweries.
